My Self-Care Tips

We all have a million and one things going on and it only feels as if the days are getting shorter and shorter, and our lists are growing longer and longer.

We have to keep our body, mind, and spirit healthy in order to get done what we need to get done..if not we will go crazy. Making time for yourself is extremely important and we should strive to engage in some form of self-care at least once a week. If we don’t take the time to care for ourselves, our self-love takes a toll.. Yes, you read that correctly.. Self-love people! You need to love yourself. Why? because you are a blessing and a gift from God! what other reason do you need? If God loves you, then you should love you!

Sooo..with all that being said, here are a few my fave self-care tips and tricks!

  1. Face masks: who doesn’t love a good face mask? Hop in your car, head on over to Target, Ulta, Sephora (or Wal-Mart if you’re about that life) and check out the amazing face masks that are waiting for you! I prefer mud masks because they help with removing impurities (no, not sin; just the nasty junk that floats around in the air and gets stuck in your pores). Here is the one that I use by SheaMoisture.
  2. Mani/Pedi: so if face masks aren’t your thing, then I’m sure you will enjoy getting your hands and feet loved on. I love going to get my nails done, and on days where I feel like really spoiling myself I will throw in a pedicure too! (even though this doesn’t happen as often as I would like, I am a college student so ya know #ballinonabudget) But even when I can’t go to the nail salon, I try to show my feet some love at home since they are what helps to carry and move us around – all day, everyday! So go pick out a cute polish (or not – sorry guys!) and grab that pumice stone, your feet deserve it!
  3. Unplug: in the world of social media, sometimes we can get a little carried away with checking our insta feeds, updating our snap stories every 5 mintues, and making sure that we respond to all those Facebook comments. (random: remember MySpace? ahhh, memories) Sometimes we just need to put down the phone, grab a good book, and be immersed in a good story! If you’re reading any good books lately, leave me a comment below! The only reading I have been doing is for class, which is less than thrilling..
  4. Get your binge on: no, please do not go binge eating. I am talking about a Netflix binge people! While this may not be the best way to self-care, sometimes we need to just let go and watch a couple (or 5) episodes of our favorite TV show! Right now I am trying to finish the last season of Vampire Diaries (shouts out to Netflix for releasing it just a few days after me complaining that you didn’t have it yet, you are the real deal!).. Sometimes, when I am feeling really ambitious I will binge watch while face masking and giving myself a mani/pedi! Talk about true self-love right there…
  5. Quiet time: this is, ultimately, the most important thing you can do for yourself. Just set aside 15 minutes, find a quiet spot, grab your bible, a notepad, and a pen and just spend a little time with God. Why not spend your self-care time with the one who loves you most?! This is something that I am challenging myself to do more because when we start to feel overwhelmed and stressed out, the things of God are the first to go.. I am sooo guilty of this! So instead of pushing Him away, draw closer to Him and see where He takes you.. and if you’re one of those artistically gifted people then go buy a journaling Bible and let your creativity pour out onto those pages!

I hope you found some of these tips helpful! I would love to hear how you show yourself some love  so leave a comment below! Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe to my blog so you don’t miss another post!

but most importantly, don’t forget to be the light

Stressed Out

Stress: A state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances

Work. School. Family. Friends. You name it.

These are all things that can contribute to our stress level. We have all experienced it at some point in our lives. If you haven’t, then you have serious magical powers that you need to share with the rest of us. We take on more than we think we can handle, and somehow we let our self care slip to the wayside and next think you know we are ready to pull our hair out and walk away from it all. We aren’t superhumans and it is normal for us to feel a little stressed out sometimes. But it’s what we do with those feelings that separates us as true believers of Christ.

Romans 12:2 says “do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”. Well if that isn’t perfect that I have no clue what is! Stress is a mental state in which we feel as if we have nothing left in us to possibly continue on with everything that we have to do. We are at our wits end and, if we don’t renew our minds, we give in to those feelings of helplessness. I have done this soooo many times I have lost count at this point. I would feel as if I have too much going on that I couldn’t possibly handle one more thing.

I would pray that God would help me manage everything that I was doing and help me to keep my sanity, but I felt as if I wasn’t getting what I needed from Him. Well in reality, I just wasn’t getting what I wanted. What I wanted was for God to say “it’s okay Kat, let me just take away this 12 page paper you have to write, and don’t worry about reading for you class tomorrow, matter of fact I will just go ahead and cancel that for you too!”. Yeah that never happened, and it was never going to happen. You see, what I, and many others, fail to realize is God won’t give us more than we can handle, but he will surely help us handle what we are given! And guess what: while He never changed my professors mind about that 12 page paper, nor did He cancel my classes when I was feeling stressed out, He most certainly helped me to handle everything that I had to do!

I finally realized that I wasn’t getting what I wanted at that time, but once I opened my eyes and truly listen to what God was trying to tell me I knew that I was getting what I needed! I had been transformed by the renewing of my mind! God made me realize that I needed better time management, top stop wasting time on social media, quit procrastinating the project that is due in 2 weeks, and trust in Him to help see me through! So I did just that. I got a planner and began writing out my weekly schedule and what needs to be accomplished each day, I broke those glooming project assignments up into smaller pieces so that they seemed more realistic, and I stopped making excuses for myself! And man, oh man would you believe how quickly that stress began to fade!

You see, God is just sitting back waiting for us to call out to Him, our Heavenly Father, and say “Help!”. But, we have to realize that when we do so, He won’t help us on our terms (i.e.: cancelling classes), so we have to receive His help the way He wants us to have it. Have no fear because I promise, if you do this you will not be let down for Psalm 55:22 states “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.”.

I pray that you will trust in the Lord and know that he will never let you carry more than you can handle, for He knows us better than anyone else! If you are ever feeling stressed out, please just lift it up to God and allow him to transform your mind. Here are a few more Bible verses that you can reference to uplift your spirits and know that God always has your back!

James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Psalm 118:5-7 “In my anguish I cried to the Lord, and he answered by setting me free. The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? The Lord is with me; he is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies”.

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in hear, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”.

Psalm 16:8 “I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

I hope you are able to find a little encouragement in this blog today. Find your strength in Him and you will not be shaken. May God continue to work in us so that we may all “Be the Light”.

Until next time,

XOXO
